Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine and the most abundant low molecular weight thiol in most cells. It is used in cell culture and enzyme assays to study redox balance, peroxide handling and conjugation chemistry, and NuVion stocks it in Australia as a 600mg or 1500mg lyophilised vial.
- Reduced glutathione (GSH), gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine
- The principal cellular thiol, whose GSH to GSSG ratio reports redox state
- Applied in redox ratio, glutathione S-transferase and S-glutathionylation assays
- Supplied lyophilised in 600mg and 1500mg vials
Glutathione structure and research use
Glutamate joins cysteine through its side chain gamma carboxyl, a linkage aminopeptidases cannot cleave, so the tripeptide is broken down only by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase at the cell surface. Almost all of its chemistry runs through the free sulfhydryl on the central cysteine. Two reduced molecules oxidise to one disulfide-linked dimer, GSSG, and the ratio between the two forms, held above 100 to 1 in healthy cytosol, is the standard laboratory reporter of oxidative stress. In the laboratory it is used in cell culture and enzyme models for work on peroxide handling, electrophile conjugation and redox signalling.
Glutathione vial sizes and prices, 600mg and 1500mg
NuVion stocks glutathione in 600mg and 1500mg vials. Both hold the same lyophilised peptide, and the 1500mg vial works out cheaper per milligram.
| Vial size | Price | Price per mg | Availability |

| Glutathione 600mg | A$49.00 | A$0.08/mg | In stock |
| Glutathione 1500mg | A$89.00 | A$0.06/mg | In stock |
Glutathione research applications
- GSH to GSSG ratio quantification by enzymatic recycling assay or LC-MS, with the free thiol derivatised at the moment of collection
- Glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase coupled assays following NADPH consumption at 340 nm
- Glutathione S-transferase activity assays with model electrophile substrates such as CDNB
- Protein S-glutathionylation mapping by redox proteomics with thiol blocking and selective reduction
- Reference standard and calibration curves for thiol quantification by HPLC with monobromobimane or Ellman’s reagent
