What these numbers mean

Concentration is the peptide divided by the water. The vial still holds 10 mg either way, so adding more water never changes how much peptide is in there. It changes how much liquid that peptide is spread through.

That matters because the liquid is what you measure. A stronger solution means a smaller volume on the syringe, and small volumes are harder to read. A weaker solution puts the same peptide further along the barrel, where it is easier to see.

Insulin syringes are marked in units. One hundred units is 1 ml, so one unit is 0.01 ml. That is why the same vial can give very different unit readings depending on the water you added.

Common questions

How much bacteriostatic water should I add to a peptide vial?

There is no single correct volume. It is a measurement decision rather than a strength decision, because the peptide in the vial stays the same regardless. Most people work with 1 ml to 3 ml and pick the volume that puts their measurement in a comfortable part of the syringe.

What does mg per ml mean?

Milligrams of peptide in every millilitre of the finished solution. At 5 mg per ml, every millilitre you draw contains 5 mg, and every 0.1 ml contains 0.5 mg, which is the same as 500 mcg.

How many units are in 1 ml on an insulin syringe?

One hundred, on the standard U-100 scale used by almost every insulin syringe sold in Australia. A 0.5 ml syringe is marked to 50 units and a 0.3 ml syringe to 30 units, but the scale is identical, so 10 units means 0.1 ml on all three.

Does the powder add to the volume?

Not by enough to matter at these quantities. A few milligrams of freeze-dried powder displaces a negligible amount of liquid, so the calculator treats the water you add as the final volume.

Why do two people get different numbers from the same vial?

Almost always because they added different amounts of water. The same 10 mg vial reads 10 mg per ml with 1 ml of water and 2 mg per ml with 5 ml. Both are correct, and both hold the same 10 mg.
